I was reading something and noticed this remark. "lets hope that the religion that gives us all these complications has more positive points than negatives"
I guess that I'll start by saying that religion gives us the one thing that we can never live without, certainty! The most powerful humans who have shaped history were people who reached - or thought they have reached - a level of knowledge called certainty. Followers of prophets like Moses, Jesus & Muhammad, men like Alexander the great, Hitler, Churchill changed the face of the earth because they had no doubt whatsoever, of what they believed.
People with certainty are able to change the balance of things. Hezbollah's defeat of one of the strongest armies in the region, the Israeli army, occurred because it's fighters believed in their cause with certainty. Hezbollah's fighters did not hesitate for a second to meet their deaths because they were 100% certain that death was not the end of their existence, one soldier could easily stand against a troop of enemies. On the Israeli side, it was the exact opposite, the Israeli Army lives with the constant feeling of being wrong, they are always in doubt, in continuous uncertainty. For that reason, the weaker side in military capabilities was able to almost miraculously defeat the more well equipped and well trained army of Israel because of their certainty in their beliefs. Certainty creates a will of steel and power beyond imagination.
It goes without saying that having certainty in something wrong is a herald of devastation and destruction. Hitler's army were certain of something that was totally wrong. But their certainty made them a powerful force. The US convinces its citizens that it is the God of this world and that the world cannot survive without their constant "help" and "care", whereas it is destroying the world and killing innocent lives wherever it goes. It promotes a life of uncertainty and disregard for anything noble, ethical or pure. It tries to make people accept that there is no pleasure except physical pleasure. Values like sacrifice become meaningless.
It has been said that if God did not exist, then it was for the benefit of mankind that he be created. The reason is that humans have sought certainty in every phase of their lives. Pagans created stones to worship in order to reach this false certainty. Anyone who risked the certainty of these people was fought relentlessly. Islam was considered a threat to the Pagan beliefs because it shook their certainty. Not only did it undermine something that the Pagans have taken as absolute and certain, it created a new generation of people who were certain of their cause and beliefs, and who triumphed in all their battles because they were certain they were right and they were certain that their death was not the end of them.
It seems that humans have a built in instinct for the need for certainty. Without it, they can not survive or lead normal lives. Without certainty, the weak can never defeat the strong. It is certainty that is the focal point of human thought. People who do not believe in the existence of anything certain live their lives in one of two ways, they either totally forget about anything spiritual, which is something that limits their progress and knowledge
They're knowledge is limited to this life, which is really a limitation they impose upon themselves, and sooner or later in life, something will happen to force them to search for answers that are impossible for humans to answer. The other type who do think about these spiritual issues live in constant uncertainty and doubt, their lives are unstable, their decisions are distorted, and they hurt the people who are most important to them.
Islam teaches us that everything is preordained. So a human mustn't worry. My last two weeks of misery were the result of my forgetting this very essential thing in Islam. Islam teaches you not to think back on your decisions, it teaches you to simply strive and know that anything that happens is preordained. Anyone who is truly capable of being certain of this will find no sorrow or unhappiness in his life.
So what's a life without certainty like? A life without certainty is total chaos. If we can't call lying and killing 100% wrong except in certain WELL DEFINED situations (i.e. retribution), then you will find that the 1% is all that is needed for tyrants and murderers to justify all of their terrible actions. If you truly adopt a thinking of uncertainty, then how can you convince your child that lying or stealing is wrong? After all, you're not 100% certain are you? There's nothing absolute, is there? So you cannot really go and tell your child that stealing is wrong, because there's a slight chance, very small. but possible, that stealing is right. Without absolute certainties, life becomes nothing more than total chaos. And usually, right and wrong become a commodity, where the strong dictate to the weak what is right and wrong.
This little article falls short of truly showing the chaos of philosophical skepticism. But without being able to tell right from wrong, what on earth are we striving for? If not to support righteousness against evil, then what exactly are we wasting our time for? You are encouraged (not!) to check out this wikipedia article on philosophical skepticism. Good luck if you decide to pursue it, you'll need it!
